Saint John Ogilvie

Almighty and eternal God, you gave to St John Ogilvie wisdom in defending the Catholic faith and courage in facing a martyr’s death: listen to our prayers, and send us an ever-greater harvest of faith, hope and love. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

The Sign of Jonah

God of mercy, you pardoned the people of Nineveh when they repented at Jonah’s preaching; you have given the sign of Jonah in the Death and Resurrection of your Son, for the conversion and salvation of the world. Send heralds to proclaim your forgiveness; call all peoples to conversion; renew us in holiness, so that we may be prepared to receive at Easter those whom you have called to new life in baptism and the profession of faith, through Christ our Lord. Amen

Talk Less, Listen More

God our Father, you have spoken into the chaos of sin the one all-powerful Word of salvation, your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Teach us to put our faith in the constancy of your word and not in the multiplication of our own. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Set Free from Selfishness

O God of love and mercy, you sent your own Son to live among us and to die for us when we were trapped in the ways of sin and death. Through this season of Lent, set your people free from all our selfish ways to live your law of love as disciples of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Need / Want

O Lord our God, you fill our every need, though not our every want. Grant us this Lent the grace to put our trust in you and in your desires for us, rather than in ourselves and our own desires. Purify our hearts of every evil, that we may look forward with joy to the glory of Easter, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Follow Me

Lord Jesus Christ, you called sinners and outcasts to follow you. Through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, your Mother, grant us the grace to leave behind all the values and behaviors that tie us down to this world’s wisdom; free us to follow you, that we may share in the Easter banquet with you, who live and reign with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen

Deliver Us From Ourselves

O God, Jesus fasted forty days in the desert, and there chose obedience and love for you over every temptation. Through our Lenten penances, deliver us from preoccupation with ourselves and our needs, so that we may be free to do the work of prayer and charity in sincerity of heart, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Living Water

O God, who planted a garden in Eden, you have planted your Church beside the stream of living water flowing from the side of Christ crucified. Pour out upon us the Spirit of your wisdom, so that we may choose to die to self in order to live in Christ. Thus make us grow through our Lenten observance so that we may bear abundant fruit at Easter, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen

Ash Wednesday

God of mercy and compassion, you are always at work to save us, but in this season you offer your generous grace in a special way to all your people through the Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, which we prepare to celebrate in full at Easter. Look kindly on all those you have chosen, both those preparing for baptism and those already baptized, and renew us by the power of the Gospel, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
