The Cost of Goodness & Truth

“Good is never accomplished except at the cost of those who do it, truth never breaks through except through the sacrifice of those who spread it.” ~Cardinal John Henry Newman

Nov. 17: Saint Hilda of Whitby (614AD-680AD)

Eternal God, author of all marvels, who made Saint Hilda of Whitby shine as a jewel in our land, and through her holiness and leadership give learning, growth and unity to your Church, grant, by her example and prayers, that men and women of our time may work together in proclaiming your Gospel and singing your praise. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

Nov. 16: St. Margaret of Scotland (1046 – 1093)

She was born in Hungary of Anglo-Saxon and Hungarian parents. When William of Normandy conquered England she found refuge with King Malcolm III of Scotland, and they were married in 1070 and had eight children. She reformed the royal court, founded monasteries, and supported major reforms of Church life. She died in Edinburgh on 16 November 1093. She is remembered for the happiness of her marriage, for her devotion to prayer and learning, and especially for her generosity to the poor.

Let us pray.

O God, who made Saint Margaret of Scotland wonderful in her outstanding charity towards the poor, grant that through her intercession and example we may reflect among all humanity the image of your divine goodness. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

Never Accept Mediocrity

“I don’t want to be doomed to mediocrity in my feeling for Christ. I want to feel. I want to love. Take me, dear Lord, and set me in the direction I am to go.” ~Flannery O’Connor

Veterans Day 2017

Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care and keeping all the men and women of our armed forces at home and abroad. Defend them day by day with your heavenly grace; strengthen them in their trials and temptations; give them courage to face the perils which beset them; and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Nov 10: St Leo the Great, Pope & Doctor of the Church

“Although the universal Church of God is constituted of distinct orders of members, still, in spite of the many parts of its holy body, the Church subsists as an integral whole, just as the Apostle says: We are all one in Christ. No difference in office is so great that anyone can be separated, through lowliness, from the head. In the unity of faith and baptism, therefore, our community is undivided. There is a common dignity, as the apostle Peter says in these words: ‘And you are built up as living stones into spiritual houses, a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices which are acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.’ And again: ‘But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people set apart.'” ~St. Leo the Great

St. Leo, pray for us.

Nov 9: Dedication of the Basilica of St. John Lateran

Thank you, Father, for the preservation of this ancient and sacred basilica. May we learn from this dedication day the importance of preserving not only sacred buildings but our holy traditions. We thank you, Lord, for Your many blessings. Help us not to take them for granted, but to always treasure and venerate Your holy gifts. Amen.
