Between Now & the Second Coming

“Between now and the Second Coming, we must recall that we are members of the Church Militant, true soldiers of Christ. We may not need to fight off feral animals or another nation’s soldiers, but we are called to engage in spiritual combat. “For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens” (Eph 6:12). Not yet seeing God in beatitude, we stand at our posts—as parents or children; as clerics or laity; as those who have taken religious vows or those who sanctify the temporal order—watching eagerly for the breaking light of dawn and hoping for the sight of the Son.” ~Br. Pachomius Walker, O.P., All Along the Watchtower

Saint Ita

Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen

The Baptism of the Lord

Almighty ever-living God, who, when Christ had been baptized in the River Jordan and as the Holy Spirit descended upon him, solemnly declared him your beloved Son, grant that your children by adoption, reborn of water and the Holy Spirit, may always be well pleasing to you. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

The Light of the World

“There is a sort of porous membrane between Christian civilization and Christian religion. If Christianity makes a pact with the world instead of enlightening it, Christians are not being faithful to the essence of their faith. The lukewarmness of Christianity and of the Church causes the decline of civilization. Christianity is the light of the world. If Christianity no longer shines, it helps plunged humanity into darkness.” ~Robert Cardinal Sarah, from The Day Is Now Far Spent, pg. 206

Everything Belongs

“Jesus calls us to recognize that gladness and sadness are never separate, that joy and sorrow really belong together, and that mourning and dancing are part of the same movement. That is why Jesus calls us to be grateful for every moment that we have lived, and to claim our unique journey as God’s way to mold our hearts to greater conformity with God’s own. The cross is the main symbol of our faith, and it invites us to find hope where we see pain, and to reaffirm the resurrection where we see death. The call to be grateful is a call to trust that every moment of our life can be claimed as the way of the cross that leads us to new life.” ~Henri J.M. Nouwen

The Discipline of Darkness

“At times God puts us through the discipline of darkness to teach us to heed him. Songbirds are taught to sing in the dark, and we are put into the shadow of God’s hand until we learn to hear him.…Are you in the dark just now in your circumstances, or in your life with God?…When you are in the dark, listen, and God will give you a very precious message for someone else when you get into the light.” ~Oswald Chambers

Saint Raymond of Penyafort

O God, who adorned Saint Raymond with the virtue of outstanding mercy and compassion for sinners and for captives, grant us, through his intercession, that, released from slavery to sin, we may carry out in freedom of spirit what is pleasing to you. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

Saint André Bessette

Lord, our God, friend of the lowly, you gave your servant Brother André a great devotion to Saint Joseph and a special commitment to the poor and afflicted. Through his intercession help us to follow his example of prayer and love and so come to share with him in your glory. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

Saints Basil and Gregory

O God, who were pleased to give light to your Church by the example and teaching of the Bishops Saints Basil and Gregory, grant, we pray, that in humility we may learn your truth and practice it faithfully in charity. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen
